Movie Review: SHUTTER ISLAND -- Superbly Acted Thriller

SHUTTER ISLAND now on DVD, starring Leonard DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo

(This review does NOT contain spoilers)

Set in 1954, SHUTTER ISLAND is about a US Marshall named Teddy Daniels who, in the beginning, is arriving at an island that houses violent insane criminals. The worst of the worst convicts are sent here for incarceration, treatment, rehabilitation and some think, experimentation. As Teddy and his partner Chuck investigate reports of a missing inmate, they slowly discover some odd things are afoot at Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, and some of those things might be supernatural.

Leonardo DiCaprio does an excellent job playing Teddy; you feel everything he feels and his memories become yours. Mark Ruffalo is mesmerizing as his partner Chuck. I wish he had more lines, but he has just enough to back up the leading man. The plot twist at the end totally surprised me and the movie stayed with me for many days following. I look forward to seeing it again on DVD.

This movie makes me think of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, THE SIXTH SENSE, & THE USUAL SUSPECTS because of their surprising end-of-story plot twists. Go ahead and buy this one. I think you’ll like it.
