(This review does NOT contain spoilers)
ABOUT THE STORY:
Set in 1954, SHUTTER ISLAND is about a US Marshall named Teddy Daniels who arrives at an island that houses violent insane criminals. The worst of the worst convicts are sent here for incarceration, treatment, rehabilitation and some think, experimentation. As Teddy and his partner Chuck investigate reports of a missing inmate, they slowly discover some odd things are afoot at Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, and some of those things might be supernatural.
You can pretty much count on LeHane to produce a thrilling and captivating read and SHUTTER ISLAND is no different. From page one, you are drawn into Teddy’s life and you urge him on as the water gets deep and the mud thick all around him. He longs for his deceased wife and she speaks to him in dreams. She seems to know where the missing inmate is. To the very last page, you will not know which end is up in this psychological thriller without equal.
TO SUM UP:
I saw the movie before I read the book, and I must say the movie brought the book to life. They complement each other well. If you like to read the book first, I think you’ll enjoy this novel even more if you do. The movie is good, but the book delves deeper and explores more crannies of the human heart than can be executed on film.
Go ahead and buy the book. I think this is one you’ll keep in your collection to read over one day.
