Book Review: SHIVER by Maggie Stiefvater, A SOLID YA ROMANCE
SHIVER by Maggie Stiefvater
4.5 -Stars Young Adult Paranormal Romance/Werewolf
Author Maggie Stiefvater takes the werewolf legend and molds it into something new and different. One major unique point is that Maggie's werewolves are human when it's warm and wolves when it's cold. And they look like wolves (not man-like) when it's cold--only their eyes give them away, and then, only to humans who get close enough to look into their eyes. Our werewolf hero in this book is named Sam.
Human, sweet and complicated, Grace is name of the angst-ridden werewolf's love interest. He knew her when she was young, and became obsessed with watching her house every winter as she grew. She also watched for him, calling him, "her wolf" and intuiting that he was more than just a mangy animal lingering in the shadows behind her house. In novel-time, she reaches her teen years and Sam sees her in person for the first time while he's human. I wish that scene had been more exciting - I wish she'd seen him too-- but that's called suspense, and I just need to get used to it! Anyway, you can read the synopsis for the rest!
This is a solid YA paranormal romance with a very sweet relationship that grows between Sam and Grace. Unlike some books, this one does not have sex in it, but a more innocent longing that I think most teens will relate to. For parents who are looking to avoid strongly sexualized books, this one is safe in that respect.
MY RATING: My teenage daughter gave this book 5-stars, and although she's the best judge, I think a solid 4.5 -star rating is fair. I think it could have been more exciting, but I'm old and scabby. For what it is - this book is a solid WINNER. We are going to read the next one, LINGER.
