BOOK REVIEW: Moon Rising by Laurie Bowler

MOON RISING by Laurie Bowler $9.35 on Amazon

Attracted to the wrong guy at the wrong time, lovely (and human) Nessy finds herself tossed into a half-life where her “husband” is the vampire king and he wants to make her his queen. But there’s a problem—Nessy doesn’t want to be a vampire. She refuses to kill humans or drink their blood, so when her behavior infuriates her mate and maker, Hervidor, he imprisons her. Nessy escapes and here is where our novel begins.

But there’s a problem—Nessy doesn’t want to be a vampire. She refuses to kill humans or drink their blood, so when her behavior infuriates her mate and maker, Hervidor, he imprisons her. Nessy escapes and here is where our novel begins.

We see Nessy joined up with Hera, a good friend who comes from a race of beings intent on destroying vampires for their feeding and killing tendencies, and we meet Charles, the vampire Nessy recognizes as her true, destined love. She must somehow either evade Hervidor forever or face him down and kill him—neither option seems possible until she teams up with the right folks and discovers a strength in herself that she never knew she had.

For a first novel, Bowler has done a commendable job. Without giving away major plot points, let me just say that she has woven us a tale with standard and recognizable paranormal markers aligned with brand new and interesting mythical beings. You will be comforted by the vampire attributes we’re accustomed to and also thrilled by those of the previously-unknown were-species called the Gulons. This book is appropriate for YA readers as well as adults who enjoy a fun, clean (PG-13), paranormal romance/thriller. I’ll definitely read Bowler’s next book!
